Scorsese To Produce The Joker Origins Movie, Separate From The DCEU
There's no debating that when it comes to comic book villains, the Joker is one of the most, if not the most recognizable of them all. Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto have each put their own unique spin on the mad man of Gotham. We all know he's powerful, unstable and not to be messed with but not many people know how he got to be this way. The most recent attempt at an on screen Joker origin was the animated film The Killing Joke. It was met with mixed reviews and left many fans hoping for a do-over. It seems as though their dreams may (or may not) come true! In a recent story from Deadline, it was announced that WB and D.C. have laid the ground work for the live action Joker Origins movie. Deadline reports that Todd Philips (The Hangover, War Dogs) will direct as well as co-write the script with 8 Mile's Scott Silver. Martin Scorsese is signed on as producer, and they have said they want the tone of the movie to feel like Raging Bull or Taxi Driver. No word yet on who will be playing the Joker but apparently they're after someone a little younger. Leto, though rumored to be appearing in Suicide Squad 2, The Harley Quinn spinoff as well as Gotham City Sirens, does not appear to be involved in this project. Deadline had the following to say:
"This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters."
This has us wondering if a new Joker so soon will cause confusion with the DCEU. Ben Afleck was rumored to have been dropping out after Justice League and a sudden replacement there had fans worried (though that rumor was cleared up at Comic Con). So what are your thoughts on a detached Joker spin off? Does it seem too soon? What do you think of the crew they have so far? No news yet on a release date but hopefully we'll get some more answers fairly soon.
